How to Become a Certified Aerial Yoga Teacher in 2026: The Complete Guide

If you've fallen in love with aerial yoga and are dreaming of teaching, 2026 is a beautiful year to make it real. This guide walks you through exactly what it takes to become a certified aerial yoga teacher — the credentials, hours, timeline, and the questions to ask before you commit to a training.

What is aerial yoga teacher training?

Aerial yoga teacher training (often shortened to aerial YTT) is a specialized certification that qualifies you to teach yoga classes using a suspended fabric hammock. Unlike a standard 200-hour yoga teacher training, aerial YTT focuses on the mechanics of the hammock — rigging, safety, spotting, sequencing inversions, and modifying poses for beginners through advanced practitioners.

Do I need to be a 200-hour RYT first?

The honest answer: it depends on the school. Some programs require a 200-hour Registered Yoga Teacher (RYT) certification as a prerequisite. Others — including our program at Aviana Yoga — welcome devoted practitioners, movement instructors (Pilates, barre, dance), and studio owners who have consistent aerial practice and a heart to teach.

If you plan to register your certification with Yoga Alliance as a YACEP (Yoga Alliance Continuing Education Provider) credit, you'll need your existing RYT status. If you're teaching independently or through a studio that doesn't require Yoga Alliance registration, a standalone aerial certification is enough.

How many hours does it take?

Most reputable aerial YTT programs fall into one of three tiers:

  • 25-hour foundational certification — a starter credential, typically 3 days, best for teachers adding aerial to an existing class offering.
  • 50-hour comprehensive certification — the most common industry standard. Includes rigging, safety, sequencing, business of aerial, and full class delivery. Aviana's program is 50 hours.
  • 85–100+ hour advanced certifications — deeper dives into therapeutic aerial, restorative aerial, or aerial for special populations.

What does an aerial yoga certification cost in 2026?

Tuition ranges dramatically. Expect:

  • 25-hour weekend intensives: $500 – $1,200
  • 50-hour comprehensive trainings: $1,000 – $2,500
  • 85+ hour advanced or destination trainings: $2,500 – $5,000+

Ask your training provider what's included: online modules, ongoing mentorship, insurance guidance, and community access can all add significant value beyond the in-person days.

What should I look for in an aerial yoga teacher training?

  1. Lead trainer's teaching lineage. Who trained your teacher? What's their studio background? How many students have they certified?
  2. Rigging safety curriculum. Rigging is life-or-death. If a training glosses over hardware, load ratings, and inspection protocols, walk away.
  3. Post-training mentorship. The first six months of teaching are the hardest. Look for programs that include 1:1 support after graduation.
  4. Yoga Alliance YACEP approval (if you're an existing RYT).
  5. Class size. Smaller cohorts (6–14 students) mean more hands-on adjustment time.

What's the training like day-to-day?

At Aviana's 50-hour aerial YTT, three immersive days in person cover:

  • 60+ aerial asanas across two full class sequences
  • Rigging safety, hammock inspection, and studio setup
  • Spotting, modifications, and hands-on adjustments
  • Aromatherapy 101 for aerial classes
  • Chakra-based sequencing and the goddess-archetype teaching arc (our signature)
  • The business of aerial: pricing, insurance, marketing, boundary-setting

You then have five months to complete the online modules: a written exam, a research paper, practice teaching hours, and a class audit.

Where can I train in aerial yoga in 2026?

Aviana Yoga is running two U.S. cohorts in 2026:
